Shailene Woodley, Margot Robbie and Jack O’Connell are among those nominated for the EE Bafta Rising Star Award nominations.
The Rising Star award honours a young actress or actor who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition, and it’s safe to say those who have been nominated certainly fill the criteria.
Jack O’Connell, Margot Robbie, Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are on the shortlist for the award which has previously been awarded to James McAvoy, Will Poulter, Tom Hardy, Juno Temple and Kristen Stewart, to name a few.
The winner will be announced at the Bafta Film Awards on February 8.
The award, which is decided by a public vote, is not just for newcomers and child actors, and can go to actors who have already appeared in a number of films.
Former Skins star Jack O’Connell has recently took the lead role in Angelina Jolie’s film Unbroken which follows him at a prisoner-of-war camp after he’s captured by the Japanese Navy. He previously also starred in Starred Up a prison drama film and then ’71 where he plays a British soldier left behind on the deadly streets of Belfast in 1971.
American actor Miles Teller’s career has certainly snowballed in recent years, with a few comic appearances in teen films Project X and 21 & Over, he then took on a role in the blockbuster Divergent, a role he will reprise in the sequel Insurgent and this month sees the release of Whiplash where he plays a jazz player tormented by his tutor. Miles will soon be seen as Reed Richards, aka Mr Fantastic, in superhero adventure Fantastic Four too.
Margot Robbie is an Australian actress who regularly appeared in Neighbours for three years, since then she’s gone on to star in a short-lived American TV show and her most well-known role as Naomi in The Wolf of Wall Street. This year sees the release of Z for Zachariah and Focus, and then she takes on the role of Jane in latest take on Tarzan which is set for release in 2016.
Shailene Woodley previously starred as George Clooney’s daughter in The Descendants and then took on the lead role in the dystopian fantasy Divergent; she will appear as Tris in both Insurgent and Allegiant. She touched the hearts of everyone who watched The Fault in Our Stars last year, where she played terminally ill Hazel.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw has appeared in a number of British TV shows, most probably best known for Spooks and Doctor Who, in 2014 she starred in Belle and in 2015 we will see her in Jupiter Ascending.
