It’s just been announced that Renee Zellweger will star as Judy Garland in a new biopic about the actress and singer, with that in mind we wanted to take a look at other biographical films that are on the horizon.

Zellweger will as in Judy, and the film is set to focus on the star’s final concerts in London in 1968.
Written by The Crown’s Tom Edge, the film will be set 30 years after the actress’ starring role in The Wizard of Oz, and will be directed by Rupert Goold. Production is set to start in February 2018, and a release date is yet to be announced.
Margot Robbie stars as the ice princess Tonya Harding and follows her rise to the top of figure skating from her rough childhood. She went on to the US Figure Skating Championships and came second in the World Championships. At the 1994 Olympic Championships, she was expected to battle Nancy Kerrigan, but Tonya didn’t want this to happen. So her husband and hired thugs attempted to break her leg before the event.
Mary Queen of Scots
Margot Robbie also stars in this biographical film which follows Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England. Which of course condemned her to years of imprisonment before facing execution.
The Current War
Benedict Cumberbatch, Nicholas Hoult, Katherine Waterson and Tom Holland all star in the dramatic story of the cut-throat race between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to determine whose electrical system would power the modern world.
The Greatest Showman
The biographical musical drama film is directed by Michael Gregory and stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. It tells the story of how P.T. Barnum started the Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Billionaire Boys Club
Taron Egerton, Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irvine, Emma Roberts, Suki Waterhouse and Billie Lourd star in the biographical crime-drama directed by James Cox. It’s based on the real-life Billionaire Boys Club that was active in Southern California during the 1980s, the wealthy boys set up a get-rich-quick scam that leads to deadly consequences for them and others around them.
First Man is a look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon. Ryan Gosling will portray Armstrong in the film that will see him work with director Damien Chazelle once again.
Bryan Singer will direct this film that chronicles the years leading up to Queen’s legendary appearance at the Live Aid concert in 1985. Rami Malek takes on the role of Freddie Mercury in this biopic.
Martin Scorsese directs the biographical crime film which is based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran and the Inside Story of the Mafia, the Teamsters and the Final Rise by Jimmy Hoffa by Charles Brandt. The film stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Bobby Cannavale, Harvey Keitel and Ray Romano.
Evel Knievel on Tour
Based on Stuart Barker’s book, this film will be the life story of motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel.
Christian Bale will star as the Italian car tycoon Enzo Ferrari in the long-awaited film by director Michael Mann.
Tom Hardy is rumoured to be starring in Fonzo, a film which will focus on Al Capone who after 10 years in prison starts suffering from dementia and becomes haunted by his violent past.
Jennifer Lawrence is currently lined up to play entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes. She creates a bio-tech company that rockets her to fame with an estimated value in the billions. When federal agencies begin investigating the company, her integrity is called into doubt.
Untitled Manson Family project
Margot Robbie is signed to star in Quentin Tarantino’s latest project, a yet-untitled film based on the infamous Manson family.
Lucy and Desi
Cate Blanchett will star as Ball in a new biopic based on memoirs written by Ball and Arnaz’s children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., and will focus on their relationship as well as their business dealings.
Untitled Dick Cheney Project
Adam McKay has found the cast for his untitled film about Dick Cheney, with Christian Bale in the starring role, Steve Carrel as the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Amy Adams as Cheney’s wife Lynne. The story follows the most powerful Vice President in history, and how his policies changed the world as we know it.
My Dinner with Herve
A look at the life of French actor Hervé Villechaize, co-star of the hit '70s TV series Fantasy Island, who took his own life in 1993 at the age of 50.
Untitled John Brinkley Biopic
Robert Downey Jr. Will star as the con man John Brinkley who claimed to be a doctor and scammed his way to fame and fortune using fake medicine and a popular radio broadcast.
This biography will follow the last years in the life of Groucho Marx, told by a young Marx Brothers fan who spent those years as his personal secretary and archivist.
The 15:17 to Paris
The biographical drama film, The 15:17 to Paris will be directed by Clint Eastwood and is based on the book by Jeffrey E. Stern, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos. The film is based on the 2015 Thalys train attack, which saw American soldiers discover a terrorist plot on a Paris-bound train.
This looks set to be an interesting look at the intertwined story of Art Keller and Adan Berrera, friends whose paths diverged when Keller went to work for the DEA and Berrera joined the Sonora drug cartel. Covering roughly the years from 2004-2014, its a follow up to his 2006 bestseller, The Power of the Dog, which traced the early years of the drug war.
Untitled Adidas Puma Project
Set against the backdrop of the rise of Nazi Germany, through the 1936 Berlin Olympics and World War II, the film depicts the true story of the sibling rivalry between the Dassler brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, and the family divide that resulted in the emergence of two of the strongest sports brands in history – Adidas and Puma.
