We’re consistently being told we’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic, but research shows that over half of dieters are aiming to lose just one stone – but how much of a difference can it make to your health?

The research conducted by Yokebe shows that today’s attitude to losing weight is far more realistic than that of previous years and that we’re far more aware of the health implications of weight loss, with more than half of those surveyed revealed that it’s their main motivation for slimming down.

But how much can weight loss of one stone have on your overall health?

GP Dr. Roger Henderson, diabetic lead at Linden Hall Surgery, Newport says that this research is quite refreshing. He thinks that losing a stone is an acievable goal that could help on its way to reducing the 30,000 deaths that happen every year because of obesity.

Even though 14lb might seem like a small amount, it can make a big difference to your overall health, helping to reduce aches and pains, as well as lessening the symptoms of some conditions that are due to being overweight, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

With over 50% of the adult population predicted to be obese by 2050, poor diet and nutrition are ongoing concerns for governments and healthcare organisations across the world.

Dr. Henderson says that losing a significant amount of weight can be quite daunting, so just a stone can be motivation to keep you going. You'll then reap the rewards of losing more weight as a result.

Not only does losing weight have a positive effect on health, but the research shows it combats feelings of self-consciousness and low self-esteem too.

Carole Ann Rice, a professional life coach, comments that a small breakthrough can have a huge impact on your confidence. It might be a small amount for some, but it has a difference that can be seen, which will lead to a positive domino effect.

The survey also reveals that for more than half of participants, a diet plan is an important tool in their weight loss journey.

Jillian Michaels recently told Yahoo that the biggest downfall people have when trying to lose weight is following a fad diet.

“Weight loss is a matter of eating less and using common sense with your food choices. That’s all there is to it. You don’t need to fast periodically or cut out food groups.”
