About River Island

The origins of River Island can be traced back to 1948, when Bernard Lewis opened a store selling knitting wool in London. By 1965, under the name Lewis Separates, the chain had 70 stores and was rebranded to Chelsea Girl. In 1982, the company expanded into menswear with Concept Man stores. The two companies merged in 1988 to become River Island. Five years later, the company opened the first store in the Republic of Ireland, followed by store launches in the likes of the Middle East, Russia and Poland.
