Best straighteners that curl your hair

ghd V Classic hair styler

The Classic hair styler from ghd is the reason we began using straighteners to curl our hair, so we couldn’t leave this out of the list.

The highly professional tool ensures our hair is straightened to perfection, curled beautifully and adds waves we could only dream of getting at the beach.

Yes, we know ghd’s are expensive hair tools, but when you factor in cost per use and the fact that you’ll have it for so many years, it’s definitely worth the investment.

BaByliss Diamond 235 Hair Straightener review TheFuss.co.ukBaByliss Diamond 235 Hair Straightener

The BaByliss Diamond Straightener leaves you with diamond-shiny locks. The Diamond Radiance system is designed to leave your hair smooth, healthy and silky soft.

This straightener is great for curling your locks because of the plates on the straightener are longer – these are perfect for styling larger section of the hair, which is ideal for those with thicker hair. The straighteners have curved edges which stops kinks from occurring when you curl and helps create a smooth curl or wave.

Plus it has active ionic conditioners, this helps ensure your hair is smooth and not at all frizzy, perfect if you want smooth curls and waves, rather than resembling Winnie from Hocus Pocus.

ghd Platinum Styler Review TheFuss.co.ukghd Platinum Styler

The Platinum styler from ghd is the most expensive straightener offered by the brand, and although the shape put us off at first, this is in fact a great tool for adding curls and waves to your hair too.

The styler has a wishbone hinge design that means that the plates align perfectly, creating a smooth controlled finish. There’s no chance of the plates sliding vertically against each other, so you won’t suffer from snapping of the hair and you’ll get a super smooth look.

Not only that, but the tri-technology in the plates allows for kinder styling of the hair too. They might be expensive, but they’re definitely worth every penny. Plus, we all know how long ghd products actually last, permitted you look after them.

Cloud Nine Original Iron hair straightener review TheFuss.co.ukCloud Nine Original Iron hair straightener

Cloud Nine often comes up as a great alternative for ghd styling products, and admittedly we think they’re just as good. With the Cloud Nine original iron you can not only achieve gorgeously sleek and smooth locks, but bouncy curls and waves too.

The iron is designed with floating plates, so they won’t snag your hair as you style it. Plus you can also control the temperature on these irons too, which is ideal if you don’t have particularly thick hair, as the highest temperature will only leave it looking and feeling frazzled.

The Cloud Nine irons have a secret ingredient that gives your hair added shine, plus the mineral-infused design helps control the heat across the plates so you’re left with a professional finish. Look like you’ve stepped out of the hair salon every time you use this tool.

Remington Rose Pearl Ceramic Straightener 3Remington Rose Pearl Ceramic Straightener

The brand new straighteners from Remington have certainly caught our eye, simply because they look so pretty. The Rose Pearl Ceramic Straightener thankfully has the high quality too.

They heat up to a range of temperatures so you can choose the best one for your own hair, the plates are ceramic to minimise damage to your locks, plus they’re made with real pearl so that they glide through your hair without snagging. Perfect for straightening but even better for when you’re curling your hair with them because you spend so much time twisting the straightener as you curl.

L’Oreal Professionnel Steampod straightener

The L’Oreal Professionnel Steampod straightener certainly has a salon-quality design, we definitely see this sitting in hairdressers rather than our own dressing table. The design of the tool combines pro-keratin technology which promotes strong hair, and steam to leave your hair smooth. Not only that it helps to protect it from heat and the damage this typically does to the hair.

The straightener plate is wider than most of the other straighteners mentioned above, so it’s perfect for those with thicker or longer locks.

The plates on this straightener are flexible, which ensures it's easy to twist around your hair to make curls and waves too.

How to curl your hair with straighteners

Brush through your hair to ensure there are no knots or tangles. Then section off the hair so you can work on smaller pieces at a time.

If you want a tighter curl then use smaller sections of hair, while larger sections will create a looser wave.

Take one piece of hair at a time, and the straightener near the top of the head, a couple of inches away from the roots. Clamp the hair between the styler and then twist it around your hair, coming down the hair as you move the straightener around.

You only need to hold the straightener lightly on your locks, there’s no need to really clamp down tightly as it’s the heat and the styling technique that creates the curl, not the pressure you exert.

Repeat this all through your hair, if you want more textured curls twist the hair in opposite directions, however if you want a more uniform curl twist the straightener in the same direction as you move through your hair.

If you want defined curls leave your hair as it is, but if you want a looser wave use your fingers to brush through it for a more relaxed finish.

Don’t forget a spritz of your favourite hair spray to help keep the curls in place.
